The Toy Manual, entitled 'Learning to Play – Playing to Learn', is a guidebook for all those in a parenting role, on play materials for young children. All the play materials were developed by the Carpentry unit which has now been discontinued. The materials can be used in various ways, and serve many functions. Children, when given the freedom, will devise original methods of play and demonstrate ingenuity and creativity in their use of the equipment. There are no set rules on how the materials should be used.
For each toy or play equipment, the Manual offers the following suggestions:
The activities children can engage in.
The age range for which it is suitable.
The skills that children would acquire by playing with it.
Alternate methods by which the play material can be made by the parent or teacher themselves.
